West Fargo Events Executive Director Mike Amundson said opening weekend on the Plaza at the Lights welcomed more than 400 skaters over two days.

WEST FARGO — While having a white Christmas is still up in the air, West Fargoans have plenty of ground space for another seasonal tradition after the city’s newest outdoor ice rink opened at the Lights Plaza near the Lights on Sheyenne 32 development.

The ice was put in at the Lights Plaza last week and the plaza opened for weekend open skating on Saturday, Dec. 19.

The city of West Fargo owns the outdoor plaza and it is managed by the nonprofit West Fargo Events, which also manages the outdoor plaza at the POW/MIA Plaza outside the VFW on northern Sheyenne.

At the Plaza on the Lights, skating is free and skates can be rented for $5.

West Fargo Events Executive Director Mike Amundson said opening weekend on the Plaza at the Lights welcomed more than 400 skaters over the two days.

The ice was made possible in part by a grant from the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

West Fargo Finance Director Jim Larson said the $685,000 cost of the rink would include the ice, a chiller, boards, miscellaneous equipment and a Zamboni. The majority of the cost would be covered by funds from the city’s tax increment financing district along with a grant from the CVB of about $171,000.

Larson said instead of building a natural sheet of ice, which has been done at the city’s POW/MIA Plaza on northern Sheyenne, the mechanical rink will create better, safer ice.

The outdoor plaza will be open throughout the season for open skating. Skating times on the weekends and during the week can be found at www.westfargoevents.com.
