Need help finding a new apartment? Here are a few things to consider and some tips and tricks on how to pick an apartment.

  1. Find an apartment available for your move-in date and go on a tour.
  2. If you like, it fill out an application and pay the application fee.
  3. Make sure it’s in your predetermined price range. You don’t want something you can’t afford. Here’s an article to help you determine what you can afford.
  4. Check the location and if it fit’s your needs and lifestyle. Is it in a safe and friendly neighborhood? How is the commute to work? Is it close to amenities such as grocery store, gym, restaurants, etc.?
  5. Do you have a pet? You may want to take a look at the apartment pet policy. Some apartments allow pets and others do not, and even if they do, their pet policy may differ from another. Contact the property management company if their policy is unclear or if you have any questions.
  6. What are the parking accommodations? This is important to consider and depending on the climate your decision may differ. If you live in a moderate climate, you may have no issue parking in a lot and walking some distance to the entrance. But, if you live in Fargo, you may want to look for closer and enclosed parking in order to avoid the cold.
  7. What date is my rent due and what payment options are available? Make sure that when rent is due you have enough money in the bank to make the payments. Depending on your pay schedule, you may want to put a monthly budget in place. Also, are you a forgetful person? Consider if there is an option like autopay so you can set it up and forget it. This way you aviod getting caught by late fees.
  8. What amenities are included with rent and do I need to call and set any of them up? Make sure you are taking into consideration the ammenities available and how they will benefit you and your lifestyle. If they do, it may be a great fit, but if they don’t you may want to consider another option.
  9. Is leasing and maintenance easy to reach? In case of emergency, make sure that there is a supportive team to take care of you and your home.
  10. Watch out for bulletin boards, video screens, and emails to find out about upcoming updates, activities, or community events.
